I completed my official NLP Coach Training in 2007. I was a university student at the time and I got a couple of my friends to hire me for 3 months, at about $20 per 30-minute session, with 2 sessions per month.

Why did I set it up this way?

Because I had absolutely no idea what I was doing and modelled it on what the Tony Robbins coach I hired a couple of years earlier did with me. The problem is, if you do some very careful maths equation on the above, you can probably figure out…

I. WAS. BROKE.

In 2009 I moved to Barcelona, Spain to live with my then-wife (apparently being completely broke and spending all your free time and attention Googling ‘how to get clients' isn't great for your marriage).

I got a very low-paying outbound tele-sales job, working full-time, making €100 per week with a €50 bonus if I made a sale. I used all the Tony Robbins and Jim Rohn audio programs I had loaded onto my portable CD player (couldn't afford an ipod at the time) to keep myself motivated, trying to get ‘in the zone' to get more sales… but I still averaged around €150 per week, which was just enough to pay for groceries and the least expensive JiuJitsu class in town.

I felt like a loser. And I kind-of was. I was living off my wife, but not by choice. Everything I learned about limiting beliefs and negative emotions and NLP wasn't getting me out of the fact that I was making very little money doing a job I hated.

Eventually, through some twist of fate, all that Googling finally paid off and I came across some guy on the internet claiming to have cracked the code on how to sign up coaching clients.

I read every single one of his emails.

I hung on his every word.

He knew what I was going through.

And on a very specific day in the near future, he was going to solve all of my problems by teaching me how to ‘Get Clients Today'.

I bought the program (on the payment plan, using the few bucks I had left in my bank account from my crappy outbound sales job). I implemented everything he taught. To be totally honest, I was in such a scarcity mindset that I bought the program intending to use the money-back guarantee, no matter what.

But then, something magical happened…

I used what he taught me to get a couple of Intro sessions.

And someone actually signed up!

At that moment I KNEW I would never have a crappy sales job again. I just earned a whole month's ‘salary' from ONE client, doing what I absolutely LOVE!

The next day another client signed up. Then another and another, until at around the point when 5 or 6 clients signed up with me, I realized that I would have to be borderline-evil to return the product at this point.

Within 30 days, using the strategies he shared with me, I generated 80 introductory coaching sessions, delivered 30 sessions and signed up 20 real, paying coaching clients.

There are no guarantees in life and there are no guarantees that you'll ever get the results that you want in life.

Most of the big results worth going for are not absolutely within your control.

If you send an email to your list, you don't know whether anybody's going to click to book a session or buy from you.

If you do a presentation, you don't absolutely know whether the audience will respond positively and buy your product or join your list.

That's why it's a little bit foolish for a coach to only aim for the end outcome. What you should be aiming for is to dramatically stack the odds in your favour, so the outcome you want becomes inevitable.

For example:

• I don't know exactly how much income I'll make next month. But I know it will be way more if I send a daily email to my list.
  
  
• I don't know if my next intro session will convert. But I know if I do five three to five intro sessions a week I'll make way more money than if I do none.
  
  
• I don't know if the next JV partner I reach out to will want to promote me. But I know if I do a great job promoting them, then most of them will want to promote me back.

In other words following a clear, results oriented system that's designed to grow your coaching business and then not managing to get the result… is a little bit like falling off a boat and not finding water.

When the odds are stacked so heavily in your favour, success becomes inevitable.
