The ONE Thing that attracts coaching clients

Have you ever read the book, “The ONE Thing”?

It's a little gem of a productivity hack.

It's based on re-engineering your entire life around one simple, powerful question:

“What's the ONE thing I can do that makes everything else easier or unnecessary?”

You can apply it to any goal and it gives an instant ‘double-focus' – on the big picture goal and the very next action to move it forward.

For example…

  • What's the ONE thing I can do to achieve my dream chiseled physique that will make everything else easier or unnecessary?
  • What's the ONE thing I can do to improve my marriage that will make everything else easier or unnecessary?
  • What's the ONE thing I can do for my finances that will make everything else easier or unnecessary?

And my personal favourite:

  • “What's the ONE Thing I can do to get a steady flow of clients that will make everything else easier or unnecessary?”

For that last question, having served thousands of coaches over the years, the answer is super-simple, but quite counter intuitive.

The answer is not trying to do more marketing or sales or (heaven forbid) soshal meedia.

The answer makes all of that jazz easier or completely unnecessary.

The highest-leverage thing you can do to make client attraction happen easily is…

Perfect Your Niche.

When you know exactly who you serve and the result you help them get, everyone ‘instantly' gets it and can either sign up with you or refer people to you.

That makes your ads, opt-in page, free report or video training, and perhaps most importantly, your free coaching session offer… all extremely easy to write. In fact, when you're certain that you've chosen the right audience and you're offering the perfect results to them… all the ‘marketing' stuff practically writes itself.

On the other hand, you could literally undertake HUNDREDS of hours of marketing training, but if you try to offer something people don't really want to an unclear audience… you'll waste so much precious time, money and energy getting nowhere fast.

The solution?

Mean Girls Get Clients

The other night, to surprise my wife the day before our anniversary, I took her out to one of those over-priced, posh cinemas (you know, with reclining seats and dinner served to you while you watch), and we watched the one and only…

Mean Girls.

The 2024 version, which it turns out, is a musical.

(Our anniversary is the only occasion where so many chick-flick factors could possibly converge into one occasion, without me bowing out.)

As I watched, something funny happened. I couldn't help but be reminded of…

Jeanna Gabilini.

Yep.

Magic phrases that make clients say ‘Yes!’

When I first heard the idea that there are certain ‘magic words' that you can say to a potential client that makes them automatically take out their credit card and hire you on the spot, I thought it was a load of baloney.

Internet marketing hype.

It couldn't possibly be true… could it?!

Then, being a sucker for great marketing, I had to find out for myself.

Even back then, I knew I was born to be a coach. My life had already been transformed by my coach and I wanted the honour of being able to do that for other people… but I had NO clients and no real hope or prospect of making enough money to do this full-time.

The ironic thing is, even though I couldn't ‘sell' my coaching, back then I was working in a call centre in Barcelona, doing out-bound sales. (Ya know, the people who call your phone and you instantly hang up on them). I hated that job, but I was good at it and it was the only way to make ends meet until I could get my coaching up and running.

So, I gave it a shot.

I joined the program that was on offer and then, at the next opportunity, I used the ‘magic phrases' on the very next potential client I spoke with…

…And it WORKED!

The guy signed up to 6 months of coaching right then and there on the spot!

I was over the moon!

I got paid £500 in cash, on the spot! (Which was a lot to me back then).

And it happened on my very first call.

That was the moment I KNEW that I would never have to ‘work' again. This wasn't even ‘sales'. It was a regular coaching session, with a few ‘magic phrases' peppered throughout.

How I picked up clients at a wedding

True story.

A couple of years ago, a client who has long since become a friend, invited me to his wedding.

I was sitting with my wife and a coach on my team and it became clear that his friends who were also seated on our table had heard about our “Psychological Switch” approach to coaching… probably because my client raves about it.

At one point a lady on the table asked something like:

“So what exactly do you do? Is it like positive thinking or something?”

And then I said a few words about what I do.

In about 3 short sentences, I explained the impact that “The Psychological Switch” (my coaching method) has on people.

And as the words came out of my mouth, jaws dropped.

It was like there was an immediate acknowledgement by everyone who was listening that: this guy is for real and he knows his stuff.

Her immediate reaction was:

“I'm in. That sounds amazing. Where do I sign up?”

And that is a small example that points to the power of what you might call:

“Magnetic Messaging”

It's being so congruent and certain about the impact your coaching has on people, that you can talk about it off-the-cuff and it hits home with whoever is in front of you.

When I explained what my work does for people, it wasn't a pre-rehearsed script with precise wording.

In fact, I'm not even going to tell you exactly what I said, because that would be missing the point. It doesn't matter what I said. What matters is: what's your message? What do you want people to know about the work that you do, so that it resonates, hits the mark with them logically and emotionally… and leads them to want to immediately take the next step with you to become your client?

Here's an even better question:

How to spray yourself with client-repellant

Have you ever been really worried about your coaching income… to the point where you didn't know how you were going to pay your bills or make rent?

Have you ever tried hustling and spinning your wheels trying to get clients when you're in that state of scarcity and neediness?

I absolutely have (many years ago, fortunately).

And believe me, it's not a pretty picture.

The temptation is to do some kind of crazy offer to your email list or on social media.

Or, to scramble to try and get people to have a free session with you, when you're obviously not in a good place yourself.

The real problem is not just the words you use in your messaging when you're in this state, but the needy energy you're sending the message from. A coach of mine used to say that trying to get clients from that needy energy, is a bit like spraying yourself all over with ‘client-repellant'.

Your best bet is to zoom out, forget about what you ‘need' and focus all your attention and energy on serving your ideal clients instead.

The best way I've ever come across to do that is to use some 5* Client Attracting mojo inspiration from my friend Jeanna Gabilini.
